Medway Towpath

(1) Kent County Council has temporarily closed the section of Public Footpath KB1 (Medway Towpath) between Monktons Lane and the path leading up to Dickens Road.

The closure is required due to the likelihood of danger to the public caused by unsafe trees as a result of Ash dieback disease.  The path shall be closed for 6 months or until the issue is resolved.  For detailed enquiries please contact Michele Snoding .

(2) Closure of the towpath between Aylesford Car Park and footpath MR473A at Lipscomb Volvo (the link with Forstal Road) as the result of a landslip.

The entire section of path will be closed from Monday 15th June in order to ensure public safety. it is anticipated that the work will take many months due to the scale of what is needed to repair the path. Once construction work commences at the site and it can be properly secured is is hoped to open access from either side again.

An alternative route is available along the footpath beside Lipscomb Volvo to connect with Forstal Road and then using the pavements to give access to Aylesford Village.

The purpose of the River Medway Towpath is to encourage cycling and walking by providing attractive, direct routes for cyclists and pedestrians, to access employment, education, shops and other facilities in Maidstone Town Centre, and along the River Medway corridor. The path will run between Aylesford and Barming (total length: 10.5km). This will be a valuable resource in which daily exercise can be taken as part of a daily commute or as a leisure activity, with great benefits for the health and well being of everyone.   Unfortunately, there are sections of the Towpath that need urgent improvements and we, at Maidstone Cycle Campaign Forum, have been working hard to alert the local authorities about our concerns with sections of the path as it runs from Springfield to Lockmeadow (and in particular going from Medway Street to Lockmeadow).
